Red Stag Hunting
Last updated on September 19, 2016
Between 1861 and 1919, more than 250 red deer were introduced into New Zealand for sport from England.
New Zealand Safaris gives hunters the choice of hunting free range red stags, or our exceptional fair chase red stag all on our private, long term leased land. Based out of Fairlie in the central South Island our hunting is conducted on some of New Zealand`s most iconic high country cattle and sheep stations (ranches). These properties vary in size and vegetation from 3000 acres of rolling hills with native timbered valleys that is home to our fair chase stags.
These huge deer have had careful management over the last 25 years to become some of the most impressive blood lines in the world. Heavy timber and long even lower tines and main beams with great crowns they are a sight to see. Each day we leave the hunting lodge after a great breakfast and head out glassing and spotting stags and assessing the quality of each deer and what each individual client is looking for.
We score the stags on the S.C.I inch system from 300-500+, seeing between 15-30 mature trophy stags in a day. Your guide will give you an indication of what score he will be, as we are focused on what the client likes in antlers foremost. If the stag goes over that score break the client is not obliged to pay an upgrade unless previously discussed, its about the hunt and what our client likes over score.
From there we plan our approach to get into a suitable range between 80-250 yards and take time to make the shot. Bow hunting on these guys will get your heart pumping with average shots at approx. 40 yards where we can use cover, calling and blinds to get in close this is also great for non hunters to take part in the hunt and capture some amazing photos from the mountains to the ocean.
This property also has outstanding fallow buck, ram, and alpine goat on it.
Our free range stags we hunt on 3 properties in our area that are between 8,000- 25,000 acre properties. They have mountains, river bed valleys and patches of native trees and bush. Some of our properties hold other wild free range species also such as bull tahr, alpine chamois, fallow buck and wallaby. These Stags are very traditional in antler formation and we score them on points ranging from 5x5 up to 8x8 and at times bigger, your hunt on these stags you will see between 4-8 mature trophy stags on your hunt with shot distances between 60-300 yards.
New Zealand Safaris hunting properties are all within 10-45mins of both our lodges with the option to stay in one of our cabins which puts you right in the heart of the hunting.
Additional animals and days maybe added to this hunt, non hunters are welcome and we can add in some sight seeing during the hunt so you can take in this beautiful part of the world.
The rut (roar) runs between around mid March and the end of April with hunting stags from late February till the end of August.
